I Can’t Eat, I Can’t Sleep-I’ve Got to Finish Packing!

The final two days before your move will go by in a blur of last-minute packing, cleaning, organizing and very little sleep. Your schedule should be free of all activities unrelated to your move by now.

Of course, it’s not only packing and cleaning you’ll be dealing with for this last 48 hours; there are other chores to be done as well.

Verify that your old utilities will be turned off and out of your name by the time you leave your old home, and that your new utilities will be turned on in time for your arrival at your new one.

All of your important papers should be in a safe but accessible place. It’s a good idea to make copies of tax records, wills, and any other essential documents and store them in a safety deposit box or other secure location.

Use up or toss out any food remaining in your refrigerator and freezer. Even though it’s not the healthiest choice, it’s better to rely on takeout and fast food these last two days, to cut down on the amount of cooking and last-minute cleaning you’ll need to do.

If you’ve done a good job of organizing up to now, consider hosting a casual get-together for the friends and family members you’ll be leaving behind. Make the time to say your final goodbyes now, so that you won’t regret not having done it later. Schedule an open house for a few hours in the afternoon, and use disposable plates, cups, and utensils to avoid a lot of cleanup afterward.

Your final 48 hours in your old home are sure to be frantic, but they don’t have to be overwhelming. Keep yourself organized with checklists, keep items you’re still using in a centralized location, and stay focused on the exciting new adventures that await you in your new home.
